Roger Ebert called it early, when the film was released in 1985: The Breakfast Club works with an old dramatic standby, confining a group of people to a room until they’re forced to confront deeper truths about themselves and each other. Of course, in the film John Hughes wrote, produced and directed the group are teenagers – “a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal” – and the room is a day-long Saturday detention. It’s best when it’s loose and buggy, with Hughes creating room for the loveable cast to goof off. Two thumbs up.
